The “User Manual of Me” is my proven centrepiece. Over the years, I have stripped the somewhat more widespread “Manager Readme” of its authoritarian directive character and reshaped it into a tool for curiosity and democratic inclusion.

The basic principle is as simple as it is effective: making people visible in all their relevant aspects to others. Only what is explicit can be communicated and negotiated – ideally on an equal footing. Guiding questions: What do I need to do my best work? What do I bring to my team? What is essential to me and motivates my behaviour? What do I stand for? What else helps you understand me?

At the same time, we become more tangible to each other as individuals. Especially in location- and time-flexible teams, this is an invaluable advantage for building sustainable bonds. This is not only important for human reasons: trust needs a sense of mutual care. Competence, accountability, and reliability are also necessary but not sufficient on their own. Therefore, even the most professionally excellent team with a transactional culture ("mercenary mentality") can never reach the potential of a team with a relational culture.
